Apprenticeships are traditionally associated with skilled manual labour: Most people picturing an apprentice imagine a plumber or carpenter, for example. While there's good reason for this general impression, it doesn't tell the whole story: Modern apprenticeships are available for everything from hairdressing to accountancy, meaning that an apprenticeship may be a genuinely worthwhile alternative to university for some career paths, as well as still providing routes into the practical kinds of professions with which they are historically associated, as well as newer practical professions.
Any apprenticeship will include on the job training, with apprentices expected to work and study, and receive a usually quite small salary in return. Many apprenticeships now contain a component of 'off-site' training, for example, at a college or university, and may require a formal examination of some kind. Apprenticeships can last for varying lengths of time depending on the profession and the jurisdiction, but you can expect an apprenticeship to last for one year as an absolute minimum.
