Babysitting is normally the preserve of either grandmothers of the baby in question or teenage girls, both of whom are assumed to be naturally caring and nurturing. Anyone who's ever met either a grandmother or a teenage girl might question the stereotype, of course.
Babysitting is usually regarded as being fairly easy as soon as you've got the kids in bed, at which point you can watch TV or do your homework, or both, if necessary. Of course, it does still entail a fair degree of responsibility, as you will temporarily be in loco parentis and looking after young children is not to be taken lightly. Mostly people babysit for someone they know and is fairly local, so it's not too difficult to get help in extreme circumstances. Most of the time, simply gently putting the kid back to bed will be enough to fix any problems. Just don't answer any calls coming from inside the house and you'll be fine.
