Actors entertain an audience by playing characters in television, film, radio and stage productions. They use speech and body language to play these characters in both live and filmed performances. Being a successful actor requires high levels of personal commitment and creative talent.
Actors undertake a lot preparation before a performance, including reading scripts, researching subject matter, studying characters, memorising lines and perfecting acting techniques. They may utilise studio or stage props ranging from everyday objects to items created for a specific production. Actors may perform in contemporary dramas for film and TV or in ancient comedies or tragedies written for live theatre. Sometimes they are required to sing or dance, especially in musical theatre. Regardless of the piece they are acting in, all actors aim to engage and entertain people through performance. They are also regularly required to change their appearance through the use of costumes and make-up. Unless they have reached a certain point in their career, most actors are under pressure to be able to find their next job.
