There are two main types of Aircraft Maintenance Engineer, both of which currently feature on the Australian Government's National Skills Needs list. Mechanical engineers focus on mechanisms, which may include motors, hydraulic equipment and other moving parts of planes, helicopters and other aircraft. Avionics engineers work with the electrical systems of various kinds of aircraft, whether the cockpit lights or complex navigational systems. Each job requires a high level of attention to detail and precision.
Both jobs require highly skilled professionals and can be reached on a career path that goes either through university or via an apprenticeship. Aircraft maintenance engineers of all kinds must be excellent with their hands, have a good general understanding of engineering and a working knowledge of all the kinds of systems they may have to work with, including different types of aircraft. The work may require a lot of travel to different airfields and other locations or you may work in one primary location. When training to be an aircraft maintenance engineer, you should be prepared for the possibility that you will be doing a lot of travelling.
