To make finding a job easier, Adzuna brings all the jobs in Australia to the one place. This means we have the most up-to-date statistics and insights on the Australian jobs market.

Here are our findings for April, 2017:

The Adzuna Job Index this month shows 120,780 roles being advertised across Australia, 6.58% up on the number of vacancies available six months previously.

Competition for jobs increased to 6.3 jobseekers per vacancy, up from six months ago at 5.93 jobseekers per advertised role.

Salaries decline over past 6 months

Advertised salaries across Australia have seen a decrease in recent months, moving from stagnation into a decline in April 2016, as promoted pay rates around Australia dropped 1.83%. The yearly change from April 2016 is a mere decrease of 0.5% and reflects record flat wage growth in Australia over the past two quarters.

Raife Watson, CEO of Adzuna Australia commented:

“The healthcare industry will be the biggest hirer over the next two decades. Wage growth Australia-wide has been flat for the past two quarters, however the healthcare industry saw advertised salaries increase 3.54% in a struggling economy.”

“Over the next decade 1 in 3 Australians will be over 55 years of age. This will put pressure on the healthcare system and our workforce will need to grow to cope with the demand. Doctors, nurses and allied health professionals will be highly sought after and salaries will continue to increase in the industry. Roles in the healthcare sector are also less likely to be replaced by automation, as they require high levels critical thinking and emotional intelligence.

Salaries fell overall in New South Wales(-2.71%) and can be attributed to a similar decline in Sydney salaries (-2.62%.) This suggests employer confidence is down in the Sydney region.

Trades & Construction continued to see significant gains in sector pay, as advertised salaries increase 9.70%, to hit $97,545.

Advertised salaries for engineering jobs fell 3.83% to $108,062 after hitting a high of $113,124 a year ago.
