Many Australians want to make a difference with the work they do. They are realising that careers don't have to involve marketing or selling products you don't like, or working in finance or management for a big, profit-driven, corporate company. If you have a passion for creating a more just, equitable society, or a more environmentally sustainable world, a career in the not-for-profit sector could be perfect for you. Many organisations out there have a social or environmental mission and they need people from all backgrounds to help them succeed. It is a large sector with plenty of opportunities to provide service.
There are many different types of roles in the not-for-profit sector in areas like the arts, public health, museums and governments, as well as with helping causes focussed on social and environmental issues. Jobs in this sector can be extremely rewarding and provide a connection between you and your community however it is important to recognise that working in this industry can also be frustrating, especially if your organisation is not making as much progress as they would like. A career with a non-profit can give you fantastic experience though, as often individuals are required to perform multiple functions including many relating to marketing. All in all, the not-for-profit sector does give you a real opportunity to contribute to society, make a difference and experience personal growth while you are at it.
While responsibilities vary greatly depending on the role, most positions will require you to work within a team to achieve a common goal. You may need to perform marketing type tasks or perhaps become involved with fundraising activities. Sometimes hands on, physical work is required, especially for organisations focussed on the environment. Contact with the public is very common so being able to communicate well with all demographics is important.
