Being a housekeeper can be a very demanding job. A housekeeper is responsible for the general management and running of a household or a hotel, in particular ensuring that all jobs are completed on time and to the best possible standard and making sure that all staff working on the premises carry out their duties correctly and efficiently.
There is often some hands on work involved but is mainly a managerial type role. The amount of staff working at the property will vary depending on the size of the house or hotel. The housekeeper is usually responsible for all of these staff. A housekeeper can expect to recruit, train, supervise and dismiss staff, as well as plan rosters and discipline staff when necessary. A housekeeper may also be responsible for inspecting work carried out on the property to ensure it is of the highest possible standard and might also be asked to manage the household budget.

Responsibilities & Skills

As well as making sure the house or hotel looks presentable on a daily basis, a housekeeper will also need to make note of any repairs that need to be carried out and organise someone to do the work. They need to remain aware of everything that is happening on the property. While a housekeeper may perform some manual work the majority of their work will be office based so they may also be required to manage files and accounts They need to be prepared to work shifts including weekends and public holidays.

  • Certificate III in Hospitality
  • Diploma of Hospitality
