A beauty therapist does cosmetic work, which may include hair removal (for example, waxing), manicures and pedicures, facials and other general skin care and beauty advice. Some beauty therapists may also be qualified as masseuses and give various kinds of massage. Beyond that, beauty therapists may provide various complementary and supplementary treatments, such as aromatherapy and other alternative medicines.
Beauty therapists may work as an employee in a salon, an employee-owner or be self-employed and work from their own home or move from place to place (such as several salons or individual client's homes).
Most beauty therapists have a range of skills but may employ specific ones more than others (you may work at a salon and be mainly responsible for manicures and pedicures, for example), so it's useful to have a particular speciality while maintaining a roster of other skills. There's potentially a lot of variety on offer under the broad banner of 'beauty technician', so it's a good career path for someone seeking plenty of new and different challenges.
