Job Title: Male Social and Emotional Wellbeing/Mental Health Worker
Status of Employment: Full-time- Fixed Term end date 31/12/2021
Location: Located on Thursday Island
Salary: $58,000.00 – (+ 9.5% Superannuation, + 17.5% Annual Leave Load)

The following are key requirements this position;

  1. Under s25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991, there is a genuine occupational requirement for the incumbent to be Indigenous to the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Community.
  2. All applicants that are applying for the Male- Social and Emotional Wellbeing/Mental Health position (i.e., do not currently possess a minimum Certificate for in Mental Health studies or equivalent) will be required as part of the selection process to complete the initial Numeracy and Literacy Screen Process. This process is designed to evaluate a candidates readiness for formal studies; and
  3. Must be willing to travel to the Outer Islands of the Torres Strait.

Essential Requirements

  1. Demonstrated ability to consult and collaborate with a broad range of stakeholders, inclusive of Aboriginal communities, government and non-government agencies, and mainstream services to improve mental health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders;
  2. Knowledge of the complex causes of poor mental health/social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities;
  3. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the local Aboriginal community and the health needs and priorities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in the Torres Strait region;
  4. Knowledge of key State/Territory and Federal policies and resources on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mental health/ social and emotional wellbeing;
  5. Demonstrated ability to develop and implement innovative solutions that are culturally sensitive;
  6. Demonstrated ability to communicate well (written and verbal) with diverse target groups and work with diverse stakeholders;
  7. Demonstrated ability to manage projects/ multiple tasks and meet deadlines;
  8. Have completed or be willing to enrol in a formal Mental Health Certificate IV course;
  9. Demonstrated experience in the delivery of healing focused services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples;
  10. Knowledge of or ability to acquire knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health Policy, Mental Health Legislation, Queensland Mental Health Policy and a understanding of the interaction between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the criminal justice systems and Child Safety System; and
  11. Demonstrated ability to actively participate in a working environment supporting quality human resource management practices including employment equity, anti-discrimination, occupational health and safety, and ethical behaviour.
