The Australian Urban Research Infrastructure Network (AURIN) project (www.aurin.org.au) is an exciting initiative tasked with delivering a state-of-the-art research infrastructure to support urban, built environment and social science researchers across Australia.
The project has developed a core eInfrastructure framework comprising over 5000 datasets and over 100 analytical and visualization tools. AURIN supports researchers to access, analyse and model data in areas such as econometrics and employment, population health, transport planning, housing and urban development, critical infrastructure (energy/water) and environmental conditions (e.g., air quality, urban heat and climate impacts). AURIN provides access to a wide variety of heterogeneous data sets from a range of data providers across Australia. Data providers include government departments, commercial/utility companies, universities and a range of other organisations. The AURIN eInfrastructure and datasets are accessible to authenticated researchers through a workbench of diverse applications.
The eInfrastructure Team Lead is a new role that will be directly responsible for the establishment and management of a new eInfrastructure team to develop the ‘next generation’ of AURIN capability for the urban, regional and social science research community. The eInfrastructure Team lead will be responsible for the development of the strategic vision, execution and delivery of AURIN’s technical eInfrastructure. The role will develop and manage directly a team of up to 12 software developers, cloud engineers, database engineers and UI/UX experts, and involve working in a cross-functional manner with other AURIN teams and external AURIN stakeholders, in order to provide an outstanding user experience across AURIN’s future data, analytical, simulation and visualization capability. It will also involve working closely with the University of Melbourne MeG research group to manage the delivery of future enhancements of the AURIN Portal. The role will involve frequent interaction with external academic, industry and government researchers in order to translate the research outcomes from AURIN’s external projects (e.g., new methods, tools and models) to scalable and sustainable production level services for the wider AURIN community.
The appointee will have an outstanding record of designing and developing eInfrastructure solutions involving the use of spatial/locational data (e.g., GIS, BIM, location-based services/spatial data services), aligned with a deep knowledge of the current and future technological innovations required to support urban, built environment and social science research (e.g., federated data search and management, IoT and edge computing, real-time data handling, scalable cloud analytics and simulation, advanced visualization, and digital twin frameworks and platforms). The successful candidate will be an innovative thinker, able to engage deeply with the AURIN research community in order to design, develop and deploy a sustainable and robust internationally leading data, analytics and modelling eInfrastructure capability. AURIN capability is built and deployed on virtualized infrastructure requiring an excellent understanding of cloud services.
The successful candidate will be based at AURIN Melbourne, leading and coordinating a highly skilled group of software, data and cloud specialists distributed across a number of Australian universities and organizations.
The post will also involve working with AURIN-funded researchers across Australia to deliver new eInfrastructure data, analytics and modelling capability for the urban, built environment and social science research community.Position Description
