Private investigators are responsible for conducting research in order to obtain information for their clients regarding personal, commercial or criminal matters, or to help them find missing persons. They will generally conduct surveillance in order to obtain sensitive or private information about people relevant to their case, from personal observations or witnesses. They are also required to maintain records of their findings. There is a general presumption in society that surveillance and investigative work is exciting, but it's important to remember that surveillance work is generally comprised of 90% inactivity and 10% activity. Which means for every full day of surveillance, you might spend 9 hours doing nothing but watching and waiting and only one hour actively working. Some types of activity will give you a rush of adrenaline, like uncovering critical evidence in a complex matter, or conducting and finalising a vital surveillance assignment, but most of the work could be considered to be quite tedious and boring.
Investigators also gather information on the theft of commercial or private property, provide advice on security matters, conduct liability and asset checks and gather information specific to companies or private individuals. They may also be required to prepare evidence for court proceedings. Roles in this industry include Private Eye, Private Detective and Private Inquiry Agent.
