Kitchen hand or kitchen assistant work is usually semi- or unskilled, with potential for promotion to more skilled positions as you develop. As a kitchen hand, you will be carrying out any basic tasks that are necessary in the kitchen, such as chopping and peeling vegetables, washing dishes and utensils, and cleaning work surfaces. While you may be performing a wide variety of jobs, none of them require a high degree of skill or experience, and you will mainly be following the instructions of chefs and cooks rather than working independently.
Kitchen work of all kinds requires long shifts and you will spend virtually the entire time on your feet. You should also expect to do shift work, including evenings and weekends. Some aspects of the work may also be physically demanding. However, there is only a low level of responsibility, with nobody working under you, so no managing of staff or any kind of managerial experience is necessary. Fortunately, not all chefs are like Gordon Ramsay, so you shouldn't expect to be sworn at by a red-faced maniac.
The average salary for open Kitchen Hand jobs is currently $50,243, 42% lower than the national average salary for all jobs which is $86,528.
