Physicists study energy, matter, time, space, various fields and forces and the relationships between these physical phenomena to develop a greater understanding of the laws governing the behaviour of the universe. Some physicists then seek to apply these laws to gain answers to practical problems, using the new information they have learnt about the earth and the universe. Physics can be divided into experimental and theoretical physics. Theoretical involves developing theories and models which attempt to explain how certain aspects of the world behave. Experimental is about testing these theories, using the results to strengthen or alter the theory as appropriate.
Physicists overall are responsible for planning and carrying out experiments using the scientific method, drawing conclusions to benefit the advancement of science. Physicists can also educate others at a basic or advanced level. A bachelor's degree is required to teach at the high school level, and to teach at university a Master's or Ph.D. is required. The major fields of applied research that physicists become involved with include gravitation, environmental geophysics, physics education and nuclear physics.
