A station which you may know better as a 'ranch' if you're not from Oz is a large area of land used for raising livestock, normally sheep or cattle. Usually, only one type of animal is reared on a station, as different types of land are suited to different animals. Australian stations can be absolutely huge, with the largest stretching across 24,000 square km. As a result, the job can be quite solitary, with perhaps just a supervisor and perhaps one or two other hands the only people around for millions of acres. The work is very hands-on and practical.
A station hand is a junior worker on a station, performing mainly routine tasks which, unsurprisingly, often include caring for the livestock. Many young people, known as jackaroos or jillaroos, in a particularly entertaining bit of Australian slang, become station hands for a few years to train for a position as a supervisor or manager of a farm or station.
