Many people choose to spend some time working as a teacher aide before beginning their teacher training, to get a taste for the profession. For others, it's a job that fits around their childcare schedule. And, obviously, some people just do it because they love it. Working as a teacher aide is perfect for anyone who enjoys working with children and wants a job that has a positive social impact, with the advantage that, compared with teaching, it requires relatively little in the way of formal qualifications, and has lower responsibility, too: You won't be doing much in the way of planning and marking, which means that, unlike teachers, your job pretty much ends as soon as the bell rings at the end of the day.
At its most simple, the job may require performing straightforward tasks on behalf of the teacher, such as handing out books or equipment. More complex tasks might involve working with pupils with specific learning difficulties to help them keep pace with the rest of the class. Their may also be some amount of behaviour management involved, and some schools may expect you to supervise lunch and break times. Additionally, some teacher aides do light admin or office management work, such as organising books or equipment or taking class registers.
