This is a job that really suits someone who is passionate about learning and helping children to achieve their potential. Teaching assistants - or teachers' aides - help teaching staff in schools by performing non-teaching duties such as the care and supervision of children, which allows the teacher to concentrate on teaching the students. They prepare learning activities and provide individual assistance to students, particularly those with learning, physical or behavioural difficulties. They might prepare the classroom for a specific lesson, tidy up at the end of a session or put together displays of the students' work.
Teaching assistants usually work in primary education but there are opportunities to work in secondary education as well. They work in public and private schools in urban and rural areas. Generally they work within school hours of 8-4pm and often work part time. Teaching assistants work indoors in classrooms, libraries and other buildings and they sometimes accompany school classes on excursions and outdoor activities.
75% of current opportunities are permanent, whereas 25% are contract jobs.
